About SMSWizard2

SMSWizard2 is a program that can be used to send different types of SMS-messages to Nokia and EMS cellular phones, for example: Nokia 5110, 6110, 7110, 3210, 3310, 3330, as well as Ericsson T39 and R520. The program is capable of sending Picture messages (with an additional text), Screen savers, Operator logos (also “Big Operator logos”, 78x21 pixels, supported by some Nokia models, for ex. 7110 and 6210), Caller line identifications, Ringing tones, OTA (Over-the-Air) Service Settings, OTA Bookmarks, Text messages (as an “ordinary” message or as a “Flash-SMS “) and Business Cards. A “Flash-SMS” is a message that newer phones immediately show upon receiving. It also supports Nokia 3330 animated Screen savers, not by sending them via SMS as the phone doesn’t support that (to my knowledge ;-) ), but instead by acting like a “WAP-server” which the phone can connect to in order to download the Screen saver via WAP.

The program works on Windows 9x, NT4, 2000 and ME, and most likely on Windows XP ;-) Recommended minimum screen resolution is 1024x768, at least if the picture editing features are used. Also needed is either a cellular phone with serial connection and modem (either as built-in like the Nokia 7110 or as an external driver like Nokia Datasuite), or an “ordinary” computer modem, or an Internet-connection and an account at PSWinCom, www.deltica.com or www.crazysms.com. For some of the message types the cellular phone network also has to support 8-bit SMS-messages. To use an “ordinary” computer modem, the phone number to an SMS-Central, which supports the UCP-protocol, has to be known. Some examples are:

Telia Mobile in Sweden has three phone numbers, the program is designed to automatically select between them depending on the total number of SMS-messages sent.

0740930000 (0046740930000)              max. 2 messages; cost 2.50 SEK per call.

0740930100 (0046740930100)              max. 15 messages; cost 12.50 SEK per call.

0740930200 (0046740930200)              max. 40 messages; cost 25 SEK per call.

(Prices are given as an example, calling from Sweden, and subject to change as the operator like.)

An SMS-Central in Germany:

00491722278025                    (Cost unknown, check http://www.d2mannesmann.de/)

00491722278020                    (Cost unknown, check http://www.d2mannesmann.de/)

Note: You cannot use the same SMS-Central number as you use in the cellular phone!

A Picture Message of maximum size is so big that it must be split into three SMS-messages. Some SMS-Centrals doesn’t allow more than one or two SMS to be sent per call. Also note that whilst www.deltica.com and PSWinCom charge per actually number of sent SMS messages independent of the type of message (For ex. 1 SMS for an operator logo, 3 for a picture message), www.crazysms.com charges the same for operator logos and picture messages.

Note that SMSWizard2 only supports Blinking Messages sent with a cellular phone or via crazySMS!

Also, currently the program doesn’t support creation of Ringing Tones, only sending of Ringing Tones in RTTTL/RTX/MEL-format. Use “NokRing” to create Ringing Tones in RTTTL format, or search the Web
J

When opening a ringing tone file, SMSWizard2 automatically converts between MEL-files and RTTTL-files, and vice versa. Suggested filename extensions are .mel for MEL-files, and .rtl for RTTTL-files, however, files with the extension .txt have automatically detection of either MEL or RTTTL-file contents. There is also support for sending ringing tones via distribution lists to both Nokia and EMS-phones at the same time. Note that an RTTTL-file that contains 1/32-notes will be converted to 1/16 notes if sent or pre-listened as an EMS ringing tone. SMSWizard2 also tries to convert RTTTL-files to MEL-files as "smart" as possible as it "fakes" longer notes by combining two or more shorter notes to one long. It is done that way because a MEL-file can only contain notes with 4 different lengths.

Installation

First time installation

Reinstalling / Modifying an installation

Note that after first time or upgrade installation you will be asked to register the program via Internet. Registration is voluntary, but I really appreciate if you register as it helps me to see how many users SMSWizard2 has J

The installation creates at least 3 shortcuts in a folder called “Jan-Soft” which can be found by selecting: “Start->Programs->Jan-Soft”. “SMSWizard2” starts the program, “SMSWizard2 User's Manual” opens a User Manual in HTML format, and “SMSWizard2 Home-Page” is a link to the author’s homepage where information about the program can be found.

Setting preferences

The first time the program is started there are some preferences that need to be set, it’s done under the “Preferences” menu, which can be found under the “File” menu.

General preferences

Below is a screen shot from the Preferences dialog:

The program allows different serial-ports to be selected for the SMS-Central and the cellular phone. Choose the desired Baud rate and COM port for the two devices. An “ordinary” computer modem is used for the SMS-Central communication so the COM port for the SMS-Central should be the port to which your modem is connected. It is also possible to enter an additional initialise string that will be sent to the modem and/or the cellular phone before sending the SMS messages. Leave the fields blank if you are not sure what you are doing ;-) By checking the “Modem log” checkbox a modem log file called “ModemDbg.Txt” will be created in the program installation folder when sending via an SMS-Central or a cellular phone, the log file is meant to be used for debugging purpose etc.

There are 3 entries for phone numbers to the SMS-Central, along with 3 fields that are used to enter the maximum number of SMS-messages that can be sent per call. It is possible to enter just one phone number in the “Phone number 1” field and leave the “Max.messages/call” set to 0, like the example above. That way the program will attempt to use the one and only SMS-Central phone number regardless of how many SMS-messages transmitted per call. The “0740930000” number is a national number to one of the Swedish SMS-Centrals, at Telia Mobile, which accepts at most 2 SMS-messages per call.  If more than one phone number is entered, then the program automatically decides which number to dial based on the number of SMS-messages sent per call. It’s assumed that phone number 2 accepts more SMS-message per call than phone number 1, and that phone number 3 accepts more than phone number 2, like in the example below.

To set the sender’s phone number when using an SMS-Central enter the desired number in the “Sender’s phone number” field, either like in the example with a ‘+’ instead of the international prefix or as “00” followed by the national number. If you are using an SMS Central that is in a different time zone than the computer you are using is, enter the difference in the “Time difference between local time and SMS-Central” field. This will allow you to send deferred messages using your local time.

To set the sender id when using CrazySMS or Deltica enter either a numeric or an alphanumeric id in the “Sender ID (Deltica + CrazySMS)” field, the maximum length for a numeric id is 16 digits, and for an alphanumeric id 11 characters. A numeric id that contains a country code should have the country code as the first digits, without any preceding digits, for ex. “46701234567”, where “46” is Sweden’s country code.

To set the sender id when using PSWinCom enter a numeric id in the “Sender ID (PSWinCom)” field, the maximum length for the id is 16 digits.

To change phone cover (shown when a message is opened) either select “Gold 3310”, “Blue 3310” or “Grey 3330”. For EMS related files the phone shown is always an Ericsson R520.

To set the (TCP/IP) port used when  “downloading” animated Screen savers, either select “Automatic” or “Manual”. If  “Manual” is selected a port number also has to be entered.

To set other preferences for CrazySMS, Deltica or PSWinCom Internet gateways, click the corresponding button. (“CrazySMS Setup”, “Deltica Setup” or “PSWinCom Setup”)

There is also a possibility to select the preferred send device. (This can be temporarily overridden when sending messages.)

CrazySMS preferences

Click the “crazySMS Setup” button to set the crazySMS preferences:

Enter Hostname (default www.crazysms.com), Port (default 80), Username and Password. You will have to sign up for an account at www.crazysms.com to get a username and a password. If you use this link: Signup to sign up you will reward me with some free SMS messages J To disable crazySMS click the “Disable” button, that will blank out the Username and Password fields. Before doing that make sure you have written down your Username and Password somewhere else!

Note that Username and Password are transferred unencrypted when sending messages via CrazysSMS.

To send deferred messages using your local time SMSWizard2 tries to calculate the time difference between local time and Deltica, shown in the “Time difference..” field. The “Recalculate”-button can be used to have to program recalculating the difference, if it for some reason fails then enter the time difference manually J

Deltica preferences

Click the “Deltica Setup” button to set the Deltica preferences:

Enter Hostname (default http1.deltica.com), Port (default 80), Username and Password. You will have to sign up for an account at www.deltica.com to get a username and a password. If you use this link: Signup to sign up you will reward me with some free SMS messages J To disable Deltica click the “Disable” button, that will blank out the Username and Password fields. Before doing that make sure you have written down your Username and Password somewhere else J

Note that Username and Password are transferred unencrypted when sending messages via Deltica.

Before doing that make sure you have written down your Username and Password somewhere else J

Note that Username and Password are transferred unencrypted when sending messages via PSWinCom.

Phonebook

The program has a phonebook that holds the names and phone numbers of the SMS-message recipients.

Access the phonebook

To access it, first either create a new message by selecting “New” from the “File” menu followed by the desired message type (or click one of the icons on the toolbar:)

Alternatively, open an existing message using “Open” under the “File” menu (or by clicking the

  icon on the toolbar)

The left view of the new window should look like this:

Add an item

To add an item to the phonebook just left click “Phone book” with the mouse to select it like above, followed by a right click. That should bring up a dialog that looks like this:

Just enter a name and a phone number (the phone number can either be a national number, like 0701234567, an international number like 00701234567 or a “GSM”-number like +46701234567) followed by selecting the phone type, Nokia or EMS. For a Nokia phone it looks like above, for an EMS phone as below:

Note that selecting an EMS phone (or clicking the Header/Footer button above) brings up a dialog that looks like this:

In this dialog it is possible to select the Header and Footer format used when sending EMS/iMelody ringing tones. According to the iMelody specification “Full Header and Footer” is the choice for maximum compability, but that format also makes the actual ringing tones much shorter as the header and footer “steals space” in the SMS message. Refer to the phones manual if it supports Partial or No Header and Footer.

Edit, copy or delete an item

Expand the “Phone book” item, left click the desired item to select it, and right click it to bring the combined “Edit, copy or delete” dialog:

To copy the item, change the name and the number and click OK. To edit the item’s number, only change the number and click OK. To change phone type, click the desired type. To delete the item, simply click “Delete.

Importing a phone book from a cellular phone

To import a phone book from a cellular phone, connect the cellular phone to the correct Serial port of your computer, select “Import phone book” from the “File” menu. Confirm that you want to import. If the phone supports storage of phone numbers in both built-in memory and on the SIM-card you will get a question asking which memory you want to read from. Importing takes a while, especially from the SIM-card. Be warned! Importing overwrites previously entries in the phone book if their names are the same.

Distribution list

There is a distribution list that can be used to send SMS-messages to several recipients from the phone book at the same time. To create a distribution list, first add entries in the phone book. Like the phone book, the distribution list only shows when an SMS-message is open, either create a new message or open an existing to find the distribution list.

Create a distribution list

Left click “Distribution list” to select it, like below:

Right click it and a dialog that looks like this should appear:

Enter a name and click OK.

Adding items to a distribution list

Expand the distribution list, left click the desired item to select it, right click the same item and a dialog like this should appear:

The dialog contains all entries in the phone book, to include items in the distribution list just check the checkbox to the left of the desired names. To delete the distribution list, click “Delete”. There is also buttons for selecting all items, all Nokia or all EMS phones and for selecting none. After adding items to the distribution list it’s possible to check which names are included in a particularly list by expanding it.

Sending messages

To send messages, either a new message has to be created or an existing message has to be opened.

Sending existing messages

Open an existing message by using “Open” under the “File” menu (or by clicking the

icon on the toolbar.) It is also possible to reopen recent files by using the most recent file list on the File menu.

That should bring up a dialog that looks like this:

From that dialog choose the desired type of file, for messages that are pictures (Operator logo, Picture message/Screen Saver and Caller line identification) there are several file formats supported. There is also a preview feature that allows a preview of the selected, not yet opened, image file.

Note that the maximum size of a Caller Line Identification is 72x14 pixels, for a Picture Message the maximum size is 72x28 pixels, and for an Operator Logo either 72x14 or 78x21(big logo) pixels. For EMS pictures there are 3 types, small (16x16), large (32x32) and variable.

The maximum size of a picture is 120 pixels wide, and 50 pixels high. When opening a picture SMSWizard2 will use these rules to determine the type of the picture:

Width     Height    Picture type

72            14            Nokia picture

72            28            Nokia picture message

78            21            Nokia big operator logo

16            16            EMS small picture

32            32            EMS large picture

An EMS variable picture is a picture that has a width which is even dividable with 8, like 8,16,24 etc. The width, in pixels, multiplied with the height, also in pixels, must not exceed 1024.

A text message sent via a cellular phone or an SMS-Central has a maximum length of 160 characters (70 if blinking characters is enabled), except if sent as “concatenated” messages. When sending text messages via Deltica the maximum length is 459 characters, charged as 1, 2 or 3 SMS messages. When sending text messages via crazySMS, the text message length is 160 characters, (68 if blinking characters is enabled), but it’s possible to enter more than 160 characters resulting in more SMS messages sent. Note that if two or more messages are sent they will not become “concatenated” messages but separate delivered messages.

The supported formats for ringing tones are RTTTL/RTX and Ericsson Extended Melody (MEL). The preferred file extension for RTTTL/RTX tones is .RTL, and .MEL for Ericsson Extended Melody tones to avoid mixing up saved text messages with ringing tones. However, the program has the capability to automatically recognise both RTTTL files and MEL files even if their extensions are .TXT. There is a feature allowing “pre-listen” of opened ringing tones before sending them. (Requires a sound card).

For OTA Service Settings messages the file-extension used is .OSS, and for OTA Bookmarks .OBM.

Business cards use the .VCF extension, as the files are vCard version 2.1 compatible.

After finding the desired file, select it and click “Open”. Now the picture/message should be loaded and a window like this should appear:

Note the “feature” that shows the actual picture in the display of the phone! Makes it easy to see how a picture will look in real phone.

A large EMS-picture will look like this:

A text message (without support for blinking characters) will look like this:

Now, to be able to send the message, either, select an item from the phone book or from the distribution list by expanding the phone book/distribution list and left click the desired item. That should look like this:

Now two things have changed, first, the phone number of the selected item (or the name of the distribution list) has appeared in the phone’s display, second, the appropriate submenus under the “Send” menu have been enabled. Which of them that has been enabled depends on the type of the file opened.

Note that that the default send device also is shown below the phone number. To temporarily switch device click the “menu” button of the phone:

Note!

It is possible to interrupt an active transfer via cellular phone or SMS-Central by selecting “Cancel transfer” from the “Send menu”.

When sending EMS pictures to a distribution list that also contains Nokia phones, the pictures will not be sent to them, only to the EMS-phones. The same goes for sending Nokia picture message to distribution lists containing EMS phones, only the Nokia phones will receive the pictures.

Sending picture messages

Picture message can be sent to a number of Nokia cellular phones, for example Nokia 3210 and 3310.

To send, select “Picture message” from the “Send” menu. That brings up a dialog like this:

It informs about the minimum number of required SMS-messages for sending the picture message. It also gives the possibility to enter an additional text to the picture that will appear below the picture. The length of the text may be as long as desired, but using more characters than the dialog informs about will require additional SMS-messages. If you want to enter a text answer “Yes” and a dialog that allows you to enter the text will appear. In that dialog there are counters showing the number of characters remaining before additional SMS-messages is required, as well as the total number of SMS-message that will be sent.

After that a message box like this will appear:

It gives the choice to either send the message as a Picture Message (supported by for example Nokia 3210 and 3310) or as a “Screen-Saver”, which is a new feature in Nokia 3310. That is a picture, which is shown when the phone is in normal “idle” mode. Selecting “Yes” sends the message as a “Screen Saver”, “No” as a Picture Message, “Cancel” aborts.

Finally, a message box telling, whether the message(s) was successfully sent, or not will appear.

Sending Operator Logos

Operator logos can be sent to most of Nokia’s phones, “big” logos can be sent to 7110 and 6210. An operator logo is shown instead of the name of the operator.

To send, select “Operator logo” or “Big operator logo” from the “Send” menu. That brings up a dialog looking like this:

From that dialog select the desired operator, many operators are included, but if you miss some, send me an Email (support@jra.nu) and I will try to add it. Or if you are skilled, edit the file “mcc.csv” using MS Excel J It is also possible to remove an unwanted logo from the phone, just click “Remove logo” instead of “OK”.

After selecting operator or clicking “Remove logo”, confirm that you want to send the logo:

Finally, a message box telling, whether the message(s) was successfully sent, or not will appear.

Sending Caller line identifications (CLI)

A Caller line identification (CLI) is a picture which is shown when someone belonging to a particularly group calls. It requires caller ID to work. It is supported in a number of Nokia phones, for example 7110.

To send, select “Caller line identification” from the “Send” menu. That brings up a dialog like this:

Confirm that you want to send the CLI.

Finally, a message box telling, whether the message(s) was successfully sent, or not will appear.

Sending text messages

A text message can be sent to practically every cellular phone (GSM-device).

To send, select “Text message” from the “Send” menu. That brings up a dialog looking like this:

(Deferred and/or Flash SMS are not supported in some send devices.)

When sending more than one message “Send Flash SMS” is disabled. (A “Flash-SMS” is a message supported in many newer phones that will appear immediately on the phone’s display.)

If absolute deferred delivery is selected then the dialog looks like this:

Select date and time for the delivery. (The actual format of the date and time fields depends on your computer’s country settings.).

It is also possible to send relative deferred messages, just select that and enter how many seconds the message should be deferred from current time.

Note that the exact time of delivery is by no means guaranteed to be the same as wished since there may be delays in the cellular network used to deliver messages.

Sending ringing tone messages

A ringing tone message can be sent to many Nokia cellular phones, as well as EMS phones. For Nokia phones supporting ringing tone messages see the table in the beginning of this manual.

To send a ringing tone, select “Ringing tone” from the “Send” menu.  That brings up a dialog like this if the ringing tone is send to a Nokia phone:

Alternatively, the dialog looks like this:

In the first case you have the choice to send the ringing tone as either a “temporary song”, e.g. a ringing tone without a name, or as an ordinary ringing tone. Select “Yes” to send as a “temporary song”, “No” as an ordinary ringing tone, or “Cancel” to cancel.

In the second case you only have the choice to send the ringing tone or not J

Sending OTA Service Settings messages

An OTA (Over the Air) Service Setting message can be sent to (probably) all Nokia WAP-phones, and maybe some of Ericsson’s WAP-phones too ;-) It’s used to set the necessary parameters for the WAP-browser, like the URL to the homepage, connection type, etc.

To send an OTA Service Setting message, select “Service Setting” from the “Send” menu.  That should bring up a dialog like this:

Accept the default send device or select another and click “OK”.

The phone number the message will be sent to is shown in the upper right corner of the main dialog and looks like this:

Sending OTA Bookmark messages

An OTA (Over the Air) Bookmark message can be sent to almost all Nokia WAP-phones, and maybe some of Ericsson’s WAP-phones too. It’s used to set a bookmark for the WAP-browser. According to Nokia, the 7110 must have software version 04.94 or higher to support receiving of OTA Bookmarks.

To send an OTA Bookmark message, select “Bookmark” from the “Send” menu.  That should bring up a dialog like this:

Accept the default send device or select another and click “OK”.

The phone number the message will be sent to is shown in the upper right corner of the main dialog and looks like this:

Sending Business Card messages

A Business card can be sent to many cellular phones that support “vCard” version 2.1.

To send a Business card message, select “Business Card” from the “Send” menu.  That should bring up a dialog like this:

Accept the default send device or select another and click “OK”.

The phone number the message will be sent to is shown in the lower part of the Business caad dialog and looks like this:

“Publish” animated screen savers (Nokia 3330)

The Nokia 3330 supports a new feature, animated screen savers, which unlike the “static” screen saver introduced in the 3310 can’t be received via SMS. Instead it has to be accessed via WAP; therefore in order to be able to get a new animated screen saver the phone needs to have “WAP-browsing” enabled. If you already use the phone to browse WAP-sites then it’s possible to use SMSWizard2 as a “WAP-server” which “publish” an animated screen saver for the phone to download. An animated screen saver is an animated (black and white) GIF-file, which size is maximum 2.4kByte, containing maximum 13 frames.

To use SMSWizard2 as a “WAP-server” which “publish” an animated screen saver follow these steps:

  1. Open an animated GIF file using the procedure found under “Sending existing messages”. (Note that the animation will not be shown.)

  2. Make sure your computer are connected to the Internet and that you aren’t behind a firewall that prevents access to your computer from the Internet. If you are behind a firewall you will not be able to download the screen saver to your phone, via WAP, from your computer, unless you are able to allow access from the Internet to the port, which the “WAP-server” will listen on. (The port is configurable in the preferences.)

  3. If you are going to send a bookmark to the phone that will be used to download the animated screen saver make sure you select that phone from the phonebook before proceeding to step 4.
(Sending a bookmark to the phone greatly simplifies the access to the “WAP-server” SMSWizard2 is acting like if you are connected to the Internet using “dynamic” IP addresses. In that case your computer will have different IP addresses every time you are connected to the Internet.) Remember that bookmarks are sent via SMS, hence it will be charged just as any other SMS message.

  4. Select “Screen Saver” from the “Publish” menu.

If SMSWizard2 can’t find your computer’s IP address an error message like this will appear

allowing you to connect to the Internet before proceeding.

  1. If you didn’t select a phone from the phonebook then a dialog like this should appear:

Now enter the URL shown in the “Go to this URL with your Nokia 3330 phone:” field in your phone and go there. “Select IP-address:” is only enabled if your computer has more than one IP address, in that case select the IP address used for access from the Internet. If your phone successfully connects to SMSWizard2’s “WAP-server” you will see a page with the animated screen saver on. To save it in the phone use the procedure for saving animated screen savers found in your phone’s user’s manual. When finished click “Done”. This will end the “WAP-server” function. Note that the actual IP address(es) will differ from the example above!

  1. If you selected a phone from the phonebook before proceeding to step 4 then the dialog looks like this:

To enabled the possibility to send a bookmark to the phone found in the “Receiver” field, enter a bookmark name in the “Name” field. To send the bookmark click “Send bookmark”. Note that it isn’t possible to send the bookmark if you (for ex.) are connected to the Internet using an “ordinary” computer modem which you also use to send SMS via an SMS-Central J

Creating new messages

The program has built-in support for creating picture-based messages, as well as text messages, OTA Service Settings/Bookmark messages and Business cards.

To create a new message, select “New” from the “File” menu followed by the desired message type (or click one of the icons on the toolbar:)

Creating picture based messages

For a picture-based message a window like this should appear:

The height of the drawing area depends on the type of message selected; a Nokia Picture message/Screen Saver is twice as high as an Operator Logo and a CLI, except big Operator Logos, they are 78x21 pixels. For EMS pictures there are 3 types, small (16x16), large (32x32) and variable. To draw move the mouse within the drawing area (notice the red cursor that “snaps” to the pixels in the picture), click the left button, move the mouse while still holding the left button pressed. Don’t move too fast, if you do it will “skip” pixels. To paint a single pixel just click the left mouse button at the desired position without moving it. To erase simply do as when painting, but use the right mouse button instead. Notice the feature that “live” shows the picture on the phone’s display as it grows! Makes it easy to see what the picture will look like in a real phone. The picture edit feature has been improved in a way that it will automatically zoom the drawing area as much as possible with respect to the screen resolution.

When finished editing, save the picture using the “Save” menu, found under the “File” menu. Or use the toolbar icon:

A dialog like this should appear:

Enter a file name; choose location and click “Save”.

Creating a text message

For a text message a window like this should appear:

Enter the text of the message in the box. Notice the counters informing about the required number of SMS-messages and the remaining number of characters before an additional SMS-message is required.

There is a special feature which is useful when sending text messages via a distribution list, “name-tag”, which allows to enter a tag looking like *N# in the text message. When the message is sent it will replace the *N# tag in the text with the 3 first letters of the recipients name. For ex. the text "Hi *N#!" will be replaced by "Hi Jan!" if the recipients name is "Jan A". It is possible to enter more N's in the tag to have more letters of the name inserted in the message, *NN# = 4 letters, *NNN# = 5 and so on.

Save the message like above for a picture based message.

Creating a text message that supports blinking characters

This feature is not accessible when sending text messages via Deltica or PSWinCom. Also, only some Nokia models are “capable” of showing blinking characters.

For a text message that supports blinking characters a window like this should appear:

(What makes blinking characters supported is that the “Enable blinking characters” checkbox is checked.)

Enter the text of the message in the box. Notice that the maximum number of characters per message is 68 or 70. To make characters blink, surround the text with ~ characters. For ex:

~This will blink~ This will not.

The ~ character will not be shown itself.
